Mani era was so distinct from Primals' doomed-youth first decade. They'd survived/"made it" and become beloved dad-lads, yet...wotta mess. Getting (nearly) clean delivered XTRMNTR, but they never seemed to put the 1+1 of that equation together. Best stuff from the period ended up on the singles imo.

Had to go check the stacks and now very annoyed because it seems vs. the Greatest of All Time didn't survive a move.

cf. anything on Caroline Records from 1986 until FSOL, who iirc put them on blast for the quality of Lifeforms. ISDN is like a glass plate.

And for exactitude that is not a typo, the original spelling was "Lavendar" from the Gaelic "labhandar" but they subsequently changed it for common-sense reasons. www.discogs.com/release/1589...

This Irish band Rubyhorse had just moved to Boston with a song called "Into the Lavendar" www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFEl...

Gary did a deal for $25k (IIRC) for them to re-record it with the lyrics "In Tune With Technology" for Microsoft's 1997 developer conference. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profess...

Gotta reread Rat Girl. That & the Pixies book relay Gary Smith's rise (RIP). I was at Fort Apache when Tanya cut Lovesongs for Underdogs, /everyone/ sat in on that thing (Rich Gilbert, David Lovering, Stacy Jones). Heard "Pretty Deep" at least 500 times while Slade + Kolderie mixed it. Summer song.

This was like in the single-digits - fourth or fifth - of the first real shows I saw.

Also at 1:11 is "Him Dancing" not a Minutemen song?

Those first two Kramer records are beyond belief as the translation of intent in music goes. The Hannett/JD analogy is perhaps too easy, but not lazy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RxS...

Jesus Lizard bit this record hard too, it's one of the most under-recognized influences on 90s US guitar bands. What's the unifying data point? Martin Atkins, back to PIL. They all clocked everything he played on. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wG_...

Henley made the smarter choice renting out Petty's entire crew. LB was really without a paddle on that one. Very much his Zinc Alloy period.

Remixes of this and "Divine Hammer" were huge improvements. Last Splash was always a mess; "Mad Lucas" derails it, "Drivin' on 9" goes back to the Joe Harvard demos with Tanya D...if you drop those and "S.O.S," open with "Flipside," bury "New Year" at the back...could have been a really tight LP.

Was lucky to get a tip when they found that batch of promo copies (CD1 only; cardboard sleeve) a year or so back.

Heh...it was vodka, and one of the bottles was a plant filled with water (see this clip). The shot prior to this was the real vodka, which he immediately shifts to pour over his hair when he realizes it. "'Cos it makes me happy...happy." www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUxX...
