In my population modeling course I often find myself having to push students to learn through experimenting. A few years back someone related it to FAAFO. So, I just designed and printed stickers of the slightly more classroom-friendly and nerdy version of FAAFO as a constant reminder to them.

I don't, but Oliver Pearson created "a mechanical model for the study of population dynamics" (www.jstor.org/stable/1933324) that "resembles a metamerically elongated pinball machine." So, a scientific pinball machine, but not Waddington's . . .

Agreed to the extent that I sometimes present graphics to my students in this aesthetic style (e.g., the attached video of predator-prey population cycles). I hope they do, but I don't know that they appreciate it that much as those of us who sat in front of those screens typing in MS-DOS . . .

Is accidentally adding wood shavings to one’s coffee a happy accident? I’m uncertain, but it was certainly unexpected.

There's something very gratifying about making these. I think it's the all of the physical and psychological aspects of working with my hands, texture, building, creating, the sounds, and smells, but it's also building a new type of relationship with trees and their wood.

I learned catty-corner in southern California.

I always like how kitty- and catty- were divided by I80 in the east (dialect.redlog.net/staticmaps/q...).
