I see but your article made it seem like it’s pretty inconsequential (what good are human right laws but a polite suggestion) when you previously highlighted the real consequences of this case (added pressure on the states allies and business partners)

What happened to not letting doomerism take hold? Sure it’s not a guarantee that things will stop by any means, but it’s a step in the right direction that should be celebrated no?

Despite their shortcomings as a resistance org or as a government, Hamas, along with the rest of Palestinian resistance, are dealing a deadly blow to western imperialism.

And for that, we owe them a great debt.
December 21, 2023 at 7:56 PM
In summation, Hamas is a complex org with a complex history. They are certainly not the cartoonishly evil group as depicted by the west.

They serve as an example for Marxist orgs, from their adherence to demcent, their pragmatic approach, and their connection with the masses.

The book concludes that Hamas is not fully islamic, in that it abandons all secular paths, and its not fully authoritarian as it listens to its people.

It is interesting to reflect on this in relation to the previous book's lens: operating as a government in a colonized land.

During its effort to restore social order, Hamas resorted to prioritizing social harmony vs. justice for individual rights.

We see this type of behavior in socialist projects in the past who were constantly under external threat.

An interesting takeaway from this book is that Hamas struggled with Salafi groups, what westerners might call 'fundamentalists'. This opposes the typical western narrative that Hamas itself is a fundamentalist org.

Notably, these salafis were mainly disillusioned Hamas members.

This book in particular showcases Hamas' pragmatic nature, its ability to pivot to new strategies when old ones don't work. It was also a grassroots movement, so it responds to public opinion.

Brenner's book focuses solely on Hamas' role as government, post the 2006 election.

The author seeks to answer the question: how does Hamas rule?

He present a 2x2 grid with axes being Secular-Islamic and Democratic-Authoritarian.

The author being Bengali reflects on the nature of his own colonization.

These types of reflections are some of my favorite. They are in conversation with Fanon in Black Skin, White Mask.
December 21, 2023 at 7:52 PM
This book also has interesting reflections on the role of violence in the making of the Palestinian identity.
December 21, 2023 at 7:52 PM
My main takeaway from this book is the reflection on what it means to be colonized, to be liberated. Sen argues that liberation is not achieved when the colonizer leaves. An argument consistent with Fanon's work on the colonized subject.
December 21, 2023 at 7:51 PM
Sen's book is very different. It is more academic/theoretical in nature.

It pulls a lot from Fanon's BSMW and TWOTE to discuss the difficulty facing Hamas: an anticolonial group that is put in the position of governing as if it is no longer colonized.

One of their constituencies being their prisoners is quite interesting, but makes perfect sense in the Palestinian context.
December 21, 2023 at 7:50 PM
The four constituencies is an interesting aspect. Hamas had to remain fractured like this because Israel would mass arrest their leaders or just assassinate them.

This democratic centralism was shown when the org upheld the original charter. Although it was hastily written during the org's inception, the org stuck with it. This shows their discipline.

(Screenshots are from my notes. They are direct quotes from the book.)

First up Caridi's book. This book is a general history of the org. Covering its origins, from before its inception, to its inception in 1987, until ~2012.

This is a great place to start if you don't know much about the org.

I read 3 books on Hamas recently. Here's a thread sharing some of my takeaways of each, in case anyone is interested in learning more about them and is looking for resources.
