Finally, while this latest transfer brings the Guantanamo population down to 15 men, we must continue to push for the closure of the prison and the base, not just because of the brutal detention of the Muslim men housed there, but because of its use as a site for detaining and abusing migrants.

So the Guantanamo chapter, is far from over, for the men just transferred and the other survivors who have struggled for years and decades.

We will continue to fight for justice in this vein and articulate & demand our rights so loudly & relentlessly so that the state knows we will not settle for anything less.

That’s why on human rights day, we also take heed from Black revolutionary Assata Shakur, who reminded us that “Nobody in the world, nobody in history, has ever gotten their freedom by appealing to the moral sense of the people who were oppressing them.”

Today, it is imperative to remember that human rights are not gifts from the state; they are inherent to every individual, existing beyond the boundaries of permission or power. Our struggle for justice is about claiming what is already ours.

We stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine, Sudan, the Congo & other communities around the world where ongoing genocides have rendered human rights obsolete by those in power, but who have shown us what the courage to defend these rights really looks like.

While we commemorate human rights day, it is not to uplift a system that was slated to benefit the powerful & the privileged from this framework’s conception, but to reassert our position that we will never let states decide who deserves rights or to adjudicate our humanity.
