#MusicBrainzServerUpdate, 2026-01-19

Small improvements, fixes and URL handling improvements! And we found the tables of contents for our docs which played hide and seek over the holidays. We also blocked submitting tags that include commas via the API.

MusicBrainz has a learning curve, indeed :D

The two things to remember here are:
- Set relationships as ended instead of removing them, if they were once correct (I have attached a gif that shows how to do this)
- Most edits remain 'open' for 7 days to give other editors time to review them

smol inactive user purge

(don’t panic, we are talking *very* inactive… this is mainly catching never-touched accounts/spam)

A MusicBrainz user has created an *insane* script that will visualize entire festival stage lineups, and lets you add them to your calendar and more: community.metabrainz.org/t/sanojjonas... -a

I swear the only reason my OCD-ass ever joined the MetaBrainz dev chat (about a decade ago) was to complain about singles sorting above EP’s in MusicBrainz.

Dreams do come true. Never forget your roots. Stay humble. We made it to the top fam 😭🙏 -a

I recently caught someone talking smack about how many people use MusicBrainz, and it made me go check. Just to reassure myself...

To my delight, I was reminded that our editors are killing it!!

~700 releases added /day in 2020, up to ~1,800 in 2025: beta.musicbrainz.org/statistics/t...

Wondering what we mean by “seeding recording relationships”?

The first screenshot here shows Harmony’s post-import screen’s new recording link seeding section, the second shows the URL relationships that are seeded (depending on what data is available). -a

Harmony, a streaming site release aggregator/importer for #MusicBrainz (harmony.pulsewidth.org.uk) now seeds recordings (individual songs) streaming URL pages.

Recording-URL relationships have gone off the charts - literally. -a

@mayhemchaos.bsky.social delivered MB data graph porn for your weekend!

These show char lengths of song and artist names in the db. Recording and artist names both float ~10 characters, but songs have more of a “tail”. Long song titles take the win! -a

Editing data is a soothing balm, especially if you are OCD-brand neurospicy.

It can also be a way to avoid life’s issues, fall into deep editing holes, compulsively engage in unsatisfying editing patterns, etc...

Is there something we can do, as a platform? What are your experiences? -a
