Semkov was a champion of his countryman’s music. We did a concert performance of “King Roger” here in St. Louis around 1980. I loved the maestro’s intensity in rehearsal and performance.

I grew up listening to Cleveland under Szell (and Mom sang in the Shaw-led chorus),so that set is my sentimental choice, but I love some of the brisker modern recordings as well.
