This one I was probably just gonna leave it relatively similar to the real world, with the only deviations being the inclusion of monsters and weird dishes for gag purposes.

Beyond that, the only thought I’ve given to foods is the more controversial food choices of peoples like orcs and dragons

This one depends greatly on location, with many of the old world regions still using middle age styles, while the more advanced regions range from modern to cyberpunk or even early 20th century.

As for the old world societies, most of the issues plaguing them are the knowledge of better ways of doing things exist, but their respective monarchies, theocracies, and dictators being able to hold on to power with alien technology and weaponry that only they benefit from.

This is such a point of contention that the human colonists started a civil war over whether or not to finish their stargate and link the planet to the rest of human space, as many feared that doing so would eventually enslave humanity to the more powerful and longer lived species.

-time. In only ten or twenty years, your interest doesn’t equate to much. But over multiple decades? It becomes a respectable amount of wealth. Now imagine the stock portfolios of species who live hundreds or thousands of years.

How could any capitalist society create a fair playing field?
January 12, 2026 at 3:02 PM
The biggest issue plaguing the various societies of my world is the power dynamics between species of differing lifespans. Imagine one species that is lucky to see 25, while others like elves and dragons often live over 1000 years. Now remember what everyone has always told you about investing over-

As for gender roles themselves, I’ll probably leave those fairly traditional, as my story simply isn’t the best to explore alternative gender roles with outside of things relating to the biologies and cultures of alien/fantasy species.
January 11, 2026 at 4:40 AM
Gender identity is generally a non issue. From spells to curses to portions, there are a plethora of options that give people the ability to change their body in a variety of ways, either temporary and permanent, and all very convincing… so long as they have either the ability or money, ofcourse.

Half of the reason why I went with interstellar travel instead of a gate to present day earth is so I could explore the awesomeness and atrocities of modern militaries without it feeling like propaganda or hit pieces on today’s militaries

The other half being spaceships and cyberpunk tech are cool😎

Even if that all changed, his role in the world in the beginning will be that of a soldier.

He is thrown into this penal unit after being essentially spawned into a country several hundred years after he supposedly died. This penal unit was created by this country so that criminals with extraordinary abilities wouldn’t “go to waste”, and he was thrown in for a reason I’ve yet to determine
January 9, 2026 at 5:20 AM
This is something I’ve yet to actually decide concretely, as the MC’s role in the world will dictate the personalities and origins of all of the supporting characters around him.

But I’ll tell you my current idea, which is that he becomes part of a military penal unit.

AI could never replace this

I haven’t gotten far enough to narrow down every specific country and kingdom. I basically plan to base them around what the narrative makes necessary
January 8, 2026 at 5:14 PM
Any combination of government, economy, and class system could exist somewhere in this world, and one of the things I’d like to explore is how these systems deal with each other and things like the power dynamics between peoples with humanlike lifespans, 20 year lifespans, and millennial lifespans.
January 8, 2026 at 5:13 PM
Depends on the country. The countries established by the terrans are mostly republics with capitalist or socialist economies resembling the USA and Western Europe. Many of the old world kingdoms hold on to their theocracies and monarchies, while others have evolved into all sorts of different things
January 8, 2026 at 5:11 PM
-too generic. Then I watched Trigun, and I was captivated by the idea of an interstellar expedition gone wrong. Then I sprinkled in ideas from Cyberpunk, Half Life, and a few other IPs and that was my starting point.
January 7, 2026 at 4:49 PM
The spark that began this worldbuilding process was actually the anime series GATE. Everyone loves it, yet it remains untouched since the mid 2010s with nothing else like it coming along. So I thought I could fill that gap… eventually.

It started off as an isekai idea, but I thought that would be-
January 7, 2026 at 4:45 PM
The protagonist gets to this new planet by signing up for an interstellar expedition that goes wrong. As for why he signed up for it, let’s just say that loved ones were no longer a concern for him.
January 7, 2026 at 4:44 PM
As for a tangible aspect of the setting itself. Magic is probably the biggest thing he finds useful, as it didn’t exist on Earth.
January 6, 2026 at 8:13 PM
One particular aspect that the protagonist finds useful is that nobody in this new world recognizes him. Back when he was on earth, he was a rather infamous mercenary, and due to a lengthy time skip and how it occurred, even the people he came to the planet with are all long gone.
January 6, 2026 at 8:12 PM
Long story short, all of the above. Monsters, theocratic/monarchal/authoritarian governments uplifted with technology they weren’t ready for, conspiracies involving demon lords and dark gods in the underworld, a parasitic race attempting to unify all souls into one consciousness, and more!
January 5, 2026 at 4:36 PM
Some areas affected by wild magic become desolate and barren, unable to support life, while others become overgrown and overrun with monsters, becoming too dangerous to live in.

Most of these places are like this due to previous wars, and are usually the sites of terrible atrocities as well.
January 4, 2026 at 5:05 PM
Similar to modern cities in today’s world, many of the kingdoms that have embraced the modern technologies brought by the Terran humans have become very lonely places.

There are also places that have been corrupted by wild magic, which are very desolate due to being inhospitable.

Haunted places? Yes, in certain areas, the process of souls being retrieved and brought to the underworld becomes disrupted, and thus become haunted with souls that are unable to pass on until the cause is removed or the souls are moved away from it.
