Really glad that Sharpe and his men didn't have to come up against this gun at Barossa! It's an 1880s German 15cm breechloader. Still in use during the Great War.

Really pleased to be at Clan Cameron Museum, Achnacarry (that's near Ft William)next Wednesday (27th Aug) to talk about this gem. Captured at Loos by 5th Bn Cameron Highlanders. If you're around do come along (11.00-15.00) - I'll be the lonely nerd standing by the gun. #FWW #WW1 #Greatwargroup #WFA

On 11 April 1918 40th Division had been fighting for two days. Now 119 Bde and 120 Bde each consisted of a single composite battalion. During the day they withdrew a further 2km by stages and were relieved late at night. The division lost 4491 men, 1442 from 119 Bde. #FWW ##WW1 #bantams

OTD in 1918 all hell let loose on the British 40th Division and Portuguese 2nd Division on the Lys. Fog, gas, smoke, communications severed, and confusion everywhere. And no, Brig-Gen Frank Crozier did not (probably) order the machine gunning of retreating Portuguese.

My latest article in the WFA's 'Stand To' has been published without the links to the endnotes! If you want a referenced version drop me a dm and I can send a Word doc. The photo by the way is not Crozier but Lt (later Captain) GV Jones MC, 18th Welsh #WFA #FWW #WW1

'Brasshat' was writen after years of dissapointment and involvement in the 1930s peace movement. For a more nuanced (I hope) appreciation of Crozier see my book 'No bad soldiers'(Helion) and discover the story of the Welsh Bantam Brigade and their commander(s). #FWW #WW1
