Saving the world with muscle!
Let’s keep it that way: low energy. Why? Because it’s a ruse, an incitement to stoop to their level. A militant response will only justify their lies. They are more than happy to escalate.

There is a second major perceptual system whose function is fundamentally haptic and integrative. Insight. Just as we spent the last few centuries developing objective reason, we must take some time to develop the capacity for insight. The problems we face require it.

You are being playful about something that is deadly serious. Mental disorders are very active right now. You can have fun or you can be sincere about what is crazy.
The Metacrisis is not a word game.

A piezo coil that refused to fold.

This is a helical protein coil? It is a lot longer than I expected. In actuality is the helical chain also looped as a larger helical system? How does this register movement neurologically I wonder. It looks highly responsive throughout its structure. Time to read more of your work!

The tonic system of muscles is postural, attitudinal. Sherrington explores this in his powerful synthesis on perceptual systems in Integrative Action (1906). The breakthrough was proprioception. We now possess the anatomical knowledge embodying this perceptual breakthrough. Interested?

Are you aware of internal model theory in cybernetics and the models of life in use by Friston et al as well as the analogous but influential historical one described by Sherrington?

Nice article! The foundation of physical homeostasis is the neurology of proprioception. Worked out by Sherrington so long ago it’s motoric anatomy has remained invisible until recently. This “deep field” is the perceptual system that is the key.

A beautiful solution speaks for itself.
Kindly share your draft.

Surprisal at a global level requires belief updating in the global model, starting with the perceptual systems of the Markov blanket. These were first defined by Sherrington in 1906 and we are still getting them wrong. Belief updating involves getting them right. This is where to start.

The mentalist bias in perceptual systems is exteroceptive. Hence dominant—but that doesn’t justify it invisibility, our cultural control bias. Interoception is emotional and incomplete physiologically. But proprioception, Sherrington’s “deep field,” is haptic and physical and drives meaning making.

Ugh. Nice until the white guy with glasses sitting in front of his books. Tedious. Boring posture. Yap yap. The fact that it needed explication is a problem. The fact that it needed explication from an “expert” is a bigger problem. I would rather have heard from the young creators themselves!

I vote for the mortal substrate.

Excellent article. I work on perceptual systems from a somatic perspective with deep historical references to Sherrington and a focus on proprioception.

Seeing this as either an art or a sport helps us to bring different faculties to the pursuit of truth. In my work philosophy is not quite a sport but has everything to do with (deep inner) physical performance. It is active, haptic, and embodied.

I am coming to this late. This would be a dream come true. I found you through your recent paper on perceptual control theory. My interest is in perceptual systems and in particular proprioception. Am I too late?
