Very happy to share that I get to continue working as a researcher at the Swedish Veterinary Agency for the foreseeable future, studying the impact of climate change on animals & humans in a One Health perspective, including vector surveillance & work towards safe food & water in a changing world.

Congratulations to Jing Jonavan Leong on defending his master thesis looking at effects of environmental factors on early and late growth rate in nestling collared, pied and hybrid flycatchers!!! It was fun working with you on this project! @qvarnstromlab.bsky.social @animecol-uu.bsky.social

I had a blast visiting the applied zoology department of @tudresden.bsky.social where I gave a seminar.Huge thanks @martingarlovsky.bsky.social & Klaus Reinhardt's group for hosting me & sharing a bit of all the cool research that's going on in the group! I even got to see my 1st live bedbug mating!

We are closing this annual revolution with some hardcore genomics: Gabriel David uses long read sequencing to quantify structural variants in rock ptarmigans and Jacob Höglund, surprisingly not talking about birds, convinces us of the benefits of a new reference genome for the clouded apollo. 🧪🪶🦋

Moving on to more recent divergence, Joshua Hufton compares gene expression between cichlids with different jaw types, and Per Alström walks us through complicated patterns of genomic & phenotypic divergence in Yellow and Citrine Wagtails.

Kicking off day 2 of our Revolution @animecol-uu.bsky.social with a fantastic talk by Luc Bussière, both a wake up call on the urgency to address monoculture practices in huge food producers, and some hope in more "resistance-proof" biological pest control methods if evolution is accounted for.🧪🌍🌿🐛🦋

Anna Qvarnström @qvarnstromlab.bsky.social presents: "inheritance of wealth" (territory quality) in collared flycatchers. We looked at phenotypic & genomic predictors of resource acquisition over 20years on Öland. Work under review together with @erynmcfarlane.bsky.social & many others.

UU Animal Ecology alumnus Ivain Martinossi visits from NTNU (Norway) to talk about how temperature affects operational sex ratio, courtship behaviour & other mating dynamics across two-spotted goby populations. Does latitude & climate affect how & when the sexes compete over mating?🧪🦑🐟#evolution

Very thankful for the continued support from the Foundation for Zoological Research, without which field work & long term monitoring of the flycatchers would simply not be possible.
This year the grants were announced during the annual dinner, after a day of fascinating science. Congrats to all!!!
