NYC mother of remarkable kids dealing with the school system. I complain a lot. She/ them
we were supposed to get our radiators upgraded this week, so they had us clear out a space around them for the work. apparently it's been postponed... I don't have room in this apt to keep everything cleared long term? it's all going back soon, and I guess they'll have to deal

A water main break two miles south of here has stopped the subway service. It's a very large portion of the subway to be affected by this.. oof

I do not like this weather. Definitely an improvement from everything being on fire. But did it have to get this cold?

There was one NYC HS I felt my son might do well in, and I just found out their special education leader left last year and the school's become awful. The lack of real gifted education in the city has hurt 2E students so much, as schools and teachers expect students to just bootstrap themselves

The MTA really needs to be adding 1 train service during these A train shutdowns.

Smoke is literally filling my apartment because Adams is a horrible, evil mayor.
NEW:

By cutting the exact people meant to keep the city's parks free from fallen, dead trees and keep the forests healthy, Eric Adams has set up a tinderbox that's already igniting.

As a parent of ND kids, I find "progressive" schools are generally poor fits, as they very often don't provide enough executive function support. But these problems seem deeper, and it's clear they are not even following the law regarding IEPs.
One of NYC's most coveted high schools has steadily enrolled more students with disabilities. But parents say their kids aren't getting services they're entitled to.

Deeply reported piece from @michaelelsenroo.bsky.social on the crisis unfolding at Beacon HS

A crisis over special education and leadership at Beacon, one of NYC’s top high schools
Some parents and teachers blame interim Principal Johnny Ventura for turmoil at Beacon. Others say he inherited problems that predate him.

Loving all of the parents saying "IDEA is the law", as if funding and support for disabled students is guaranteed. It's only been funded at ~15% (not even the full 40%), but it can always go lower. And the law isn't always the law with Trump.

It is me. The item who hates the NYC Marathon for a series of petty grievances. Today's is my bus route (well north of everything) is all messed up.

My son's school lost their after-school funding. My daughter's old school lost their funding. My daughter's new school has draconian attendance policies to make sure they don't lose funding.. How after-school is set up in NYC is broken

My son was playing with some other kids, and they started having a hard time sharing. Rather than fight with them, he came over to sit with me. He said he could "see where *that* was going" and didn't want to escalate. Like, where'd that maturity come from

Son has been trying to be more independent by carrying his backpack to school on his own. This morning we made it to the school door. But he had to take it off so I could complete the ritual of placing it on his back before his hug and kiss before school. So close

Once again wishing NYC had gifted education, and actual supports for students who are 2E. Oh, and the ability to get an autism diagnosis for kids, because how is it nobody offers the screening in a city this size (or, at least, nobody who takes insurance and doesn't require a full $10k neuropsych)

I give a little side-eye to people who tout NYC public schools, and say they/their kids attended without saying which school. Hunter isn't public. Citywide G&T and SHS is barely public. Tell me you/your kid attended their zoned PS and I'll listen.

I went to the middle school application page for fun (my daughter is already in 6th and not looking to change MSs) and it generated our random lottery number. ff. The anxiety I would have had with that number last year..

NYC special education spends a lot of money not serving students. Students with developmental disabilities and average+ intelligence do not have an option for smaller therapeutic classrooms with counselors who can work with them. Private exists, but hard to obtain.

School assessments are so meaningless. Yes, my 3rd grader is at a reading level greater than the typical 12th grader in the 9th month of the school year. Sure. He's a math kid, guys, get it right.
