I used to believe that loving an animal was a uniquely courageous undertaking––their lifespans being generally far shorter than our own. But “generally” means nothing to me these days. And “lifespan” is a word I no longer use to measure length––but width. “How wide can my heart open to this life, to this world, and to everyone in it?” feels like a far more important question now than, “How long will I live?” A long life doesn’t innately equate to a full one. A short life doesn’t innately equate to a life cut short. None of us know whose good veins will last the year and whose won’t. Therefore, to love, no matter who you are loving, is courageous. Is as heroic and as valiant as anything we will do on this planet made of so much worth cherishing, so much worth sniffing the beautiful butts of.

I am the snack maker / rinser of shampoo / untangler of 8-year-old hair and 8-year old thoughts / comforter / stain remover / lego builder / repairer of things broken / pourer of the milk / giver of medicine / pillow, sometimes / payer of bills / rememberer of what we have and what we need / basketball cheerleader / fighter of bad dreams / chauffeur / folder of clothes and sometimes the one who just shoves them in a drawer / hand holder / watcher of every new thing she wants to show me / tails when she is sonic / trying my very best. Because of this, there are things that I want to be easy that aren’t. Like gathering what’s left and pouring it where I can / always being the one reaching / sending words out into space and hoping they come back / salvaging what’s left of a bad day / turning off my mind / letting some things go / being strong and soft / being strong and soft.

I read somewhere that cracks are how the light gets in. But what if everything else gets in, too? There are no words for what it feels like to be seen- like letting go of a breath I didn’t know I was holding while bracing for a gut punch, too. I live my life in the shadow of that juxtaposition, knuckles white from holding on. Then again, they say nothing that is meant for you in life will require a tight grip. Maybe I’ve spent too much time grasping, trying to mend the cracks. Now I’m just trying to bring my wishes back down to earth, even if that means letting them all fall. Please, give me a soft place to land.

The end of one hell of a season doesn’t feel so bad when I think about how much positive change the nuggets brought to this kids life. Basketball has brought her out of her shell in a way I didn’t think was possible. Looking forward to her 100 questions about Jokic and Mr Nugget this offseason.

Insomnia musings I guess.
The act of being vulnerable always feels like a punch to the chest. I’m looking everywhere in this ring for a place to plant my white flag, a way to find the exit before it finds me. I would float like a butterfly if I wasn’t so busy tripping over myself. I telegraph my punches but the truth is, I don’t want to put my fists up anymore. they always end up swinging too hard. I don’t want to brace for the uppercut that always follows leaving myself open. So my hopes sting like a bee straight into my heartstrings and I don’t know if it’s a reflex or the impact that makes me shy away. in the end, maybe the prize I get for tapping out is leaving here in one piece.
