I feel this. 2020 and beyond has basically beaten my creativity into a pulp.

I don't know what's it like to have monocular vision, but I wonder if things like peripheral vision affects how we see things in relation to each other. That and we also have the luxury of moving around the space to observe an object.

It can be! If I stare at something long enough my eyes start to notice details it wouldn't get from staring at a photograph. Drawing moving subjects like animals is even harder because I have to rely more on short term memory. I still prefer it because maybe it feels more "immersive" than photos?

I do think that learning how to draw from observation has strengthened my mental library of symbols, and helped supplement what photos lack.

It's why I prefer drawing from life. In an ideal world I would have a garage full of props to draw from, or go to a museum or zoo to study the subject I want, but those resources aren't always available.

I tend to use photographic reference when I'm struggling with dimensionality or perspective, especially for a subject I'm unfamiliar with. Though factors like camera angle, focal length, and exposure levels can often distort the subject and make it harder to get an objective view.
