Trying this new thing out, and plugging my writing. Might also post some other fun things- we'll see how it goes.
Living in the Roach Dump on College Street meant that the neighbors were all university students, as well. As happens in school, things like parties and get-togethers were not uncommon occurrences.

I learned about the aftermath of parties pretty early on. The detritus could be hazardous.

The next throw from a rear bearhug in Jukoryu's Green belt is an oldie but a goodie. Sukui nage- the scoop throw. It's in the judo syllabus, but was out of competition for about 15 years or so. Now it and other leg grab throws are making their way back, so this may not seem so exotic. Fun throw.

Jukoryu jujitsu puts an awful lot into its first belt (green belt)- ending with bearhug defenses. The first we also see in other styles because the classic seoi nage (back carry throw) is made for this. Here we do a drop seoi nage because it's easier for beginners.

Living in the Roach Dump, we did have some appliances, including a washing machine. No dryer, or microwave. My mom hung clothes out on the line or on a folding rack inside to dry.

One day, the washing machine broke. We were living on $25 a week for food- there was no money to fix or buy new.

After my mother divorced my father, she tried dating in college, though not super frequently. One guy I do remember, though, is John the Beard. That's what we called him.

John the Beard (aka John the Weird according to my mom) was indeed a weird fellow, with questionable sanitation habits.

We already had a collar grab technique in Yawara, with a cross grip. This one, ryoeri tori, is from a straight grip. It uses a pressure point, not to finish anything, but to distract and move the opponent until a good grip can be taken to create pain and submission. Or if that fails, a strike.
October 21, 2025 at 12:59 AM
Danzanryu jujitsu's Yawara list is long, but we'll skip a bit to one of the perennial favorites. Imon Tori means insignia technique- think of someone wearing a House isignia on their chest. That is where the opponent is pushing. We accept the push to bait them into pushing harder. Then *boom*.

Living at the Roach Dump was always an adventure. My mother divorced my father for abuse, and still had to complete her degree. My Granny did a lot of watching me and my brother when daycare wasn't in session.

One year, I got a Dukes of Hazzard Big Wheels, maybe for a birthday?

We also train the jo, a weapon for peace time vs. war. It's handy to know how to swing a longer stick around, which gives an advantage when facing a longer weapon (like a sword). However, it's short enough to carry easily as a walking stick, and remain maneuverable. This kata is widely practiced.
October 6, 2025 at 6:19 PM
We train more weapons than just the hanbo. This is the bokken- which can be a weapon on its own. This is happo giri (ichi kata)- a form of 8-direction cut. There are other versions of happo giri around, but this one focuses on directional facing. From here, you could make different strikes.

The Roach Dump was not far from the UTA campus, and a branch off Johnson Creek runs right through it. During a dry spell, my father decided he could catch a bunch of crawdads in the pooled creek, and have a free crawfish boil.

Never mind he knew nothing about how to boil crawfish. It was free.

But how poor were you growing up?

The first place I can remember living in we called "The Roach Dump". I can remember back to shortly before I was speaking, so it was very early on.

The Roach Dump was university housing, on a street of university-owned houses.

I started this account to try and post about things I do, like my writing, and then added other things, like the martial arts I teach.

However, I only have so many short stories written, and feel silly updating when I get a chapter of a longer work done. So I go a long time with no updates.

Kenpo's Yellow belt tries to cover a few basic lines of attack and modes of defense. Aggressive Twins is a defense against a push that relies mostly on positioning. The attacks afterwards are fun, but could be modified to a situation very easily.

Kenpo focuses on defending straight punches because those are so common, but it also has some defenses from less common angles of attack. Cutting the Pagoda is traditionally done versus a downward hammering strike, but could easily be modified to defend a big overhand punch.

"Must Be Jelly" is the answer to what happens when the most boring profession meets an ancient one, on a cosmic scale.

" "You were at that club again,” sullenness as well as anger were present in her voice. Oh, it was going to be one of those mornings."

Furthering the concept of countering from a common stance, this is countering a backfist from a bladed tae kwon do stance. This is the only counter to a strike in the whole system. Everything else counters a grab or goes on the offensive. Use cross-training to fill gaps like this.
August 19, 2025 at 12:59 AM
Tedori jujitsu is at its heart, a self-defense art. Though jujitsu is often thought of as pure grappling, it truly encompasses strikes as well. Tip 4 in Yellow belt also has moves geared to counter stances a striker might line up in (tae kwon do for these).
This is a very simple trap and strike.

"Upsidedown Pineapple Under the Sea" is a story about time travel, and about the issues tourism brings.

"So, are you here for an appointment?"

""No, I am here to explore the ship. I want to see history in action!"

"Oh, darlin', history is fun for professors and nerds...."

As before, we can break down a complicated move into a series of moves to teach progression of the fundamentals. A move we refer to as the "Drunken Uncle"- a sloppy overhand punch, can be countered with a push, or a full body drop.

Jukoryu jujitsu is meant to teach fundamentals. As such, it also breaks complex moves into individual components to practice on their own. This series shows the concept of avoiding a hit, blocking a hit, then striking back.

"The Hunter" is about turning the tables- the hunter becoming the hunted. Or are they? Enjoy some fantasy meets film-noir.

"The two ham planets on either side of me must have come from Goon Squad Central, as they were as stout as sides of cold beef, and just as talkative."

The next move in Danzanryu's Yawara board is very similar to wrist locks and throws in many other arts. The difference here is that we teach it from an offensive move first. Sometimes, you need to intercept the probem before it becomes a bigger problem.
