Artist Statement: "Let me cut to the chase: I don't celebrate Canada Day for several reasons, most importantly relating to Canada's ongoing history of colonization & racism. I'm not at all patriotic, I usually ignore this holiday each year & go about my day not caring for it. However, as I've been developing Peony & Chrysanthemum & gradually learning more Canadian history for the project, it's impossible to avoid broaching Canadian nationalism with any historical fiction setting in this country. Realistically, in Sonny & Yoshi's youths in the 1950s, most Canadians were uncritically patriotic & didn't know or care about the country's numerous crimes against humanity (namely YT people, but Canadians of colour have also participated in pro-nationalism as both survival & class climbing). As such, few Canadians back in Sonny & Yoshi's time would've dared to be openly anti-Canada, let alone think of why to be. Sonny & Yoshi had to grow up during an era when living as Chinese & Japanese Canadians was far more precarious & isolating as it is now. While neither of them are politically radicalized at their age, the gnawing feeling of doubt & disillusionment of the "Canadian Dream's" so-called "multicultural equality" is there eating away at them. That's what I tried capturing in this painting: the quiet rejection of colonial patriotism, even in the face of everyone else around you blissfully partaking in it, without a care for what that patriotism really is." The Snake in the Chinese zodiac is associated with growth (shedding snakeskin), wisdom, introspection, & calm introversion hiding intense passion underneath. It's also associated with the colours light yellow, red & black, & the orchid flower. I went for a less traditional route by exploring an aspect of my film & webcomic project that I've struggled a lot with conceptualizing & conveying, which is the erotic gaze & repressed, traumatized sexuality. Sonny, though not ignorant to s*x, hasn't yet felt what er*tic desire feels like & has a "wholesome" ideal of what romance is ... that is, until Yoshi awakens that beast inside of him. This aching need scares Sonny, not just because it threatens his future dreams of straight domesticity, but because it also marks the end of his idyllic boyhood. No longer an innocent child, he's now a growing man expected by society to abandon his softness & compassion in order to become a "real man". This portrait is an "idealized" vision of himself as he already is: soft, tender & endlessly devoted. For Sonny, ripping off his past hopes & dreams that cling dearly to his very flesh is agonizing. Like the oranges he peels for his loved ones though, all of the pain is worth it for the greatest pleasure of them all: feeling the warm bodies of him & his beloved together forever. Yoshi is a very sexual character, precociously so & far more than all of his peers including Sonny (initially). However, it comes from a traumatic place within an era of history that was infamously puritanical & homophobic, so his (hyper)rsexuality is a source of immense pain. It also gives him terrible body image & perpetual self-hatred over not being "man" enough. This portrait is an "idealized" vision of himself as he already is: lithe, fragile & intensely passionate. For Yoshi, pain & pleasure are one in the same, & ripping himself apart where he is most sensitive is both self-harm & asserting autonomy over a body that socially doesn't belong to him.
