today's one of those days where the adderall goes into writing weird shit instead of actual errands
common among all fanged beasts is the presence of a multichambered stomach not unlike those of ruminants and whales, consisting of a forestomach, a “main” stomach, and a pyloric stomach. the forestomach serves as a crop that stores and mechanically breaks down food, with herbivores using it for microbial fermentation; some species can also produce elemental bodily fluids in this chamber. the “main stomach,” meanwhile, serves a purpose closer to “normal” stomachs, and the pyloric chamber serves to neutralize acids, mix in enzymes from the liver, and coat the resulting chyme in mucus for smooth passage through the remainder of the digestive system. in the goss harag, the forestomach is especially important, doubling as its frost sac. because of the sac's position in the digestive system, they can actually preserve whole chunks of food by freezing them solid for extended periods of time to regurgitate and store for later, an odd practice that proves beneficial for a species in constant need to fuel its high metabolism; mothers in particular may regurgitate frozen food for their young as they start weaning them. aside from stockpiling, individuals may use this to mark their territory–usually as a warning to other monsters to stay away–and one of the ways hunters can determine whether a goss harag has claimed territory is by looking out for endemic life that appears to have been mummified by this process; when paired with other territorial markings, goss harag may use their stockpiles to communicate with other members of their species. meanwhile, the goss harag's pyloric stomach is particularly notable, secreting a mixture of enzymes that mixes with its bile to produce a thick, waxy sludge that thoroughly coats its stomach contents for easier digestion and smooth passage of any especially troublesome parts it's consumed. said to grant immortality and cure all ills, one must take great care whenever extracting this mixture, as it will rapidly degrade into a gritty, useless powder once it makes contact with the air; if a collection of this substance happens to make its way through the beast intact, forever, one can still harvest and treasure it as a vibrant, delicate gem. the furless areas on a goss harag's face and limbs are not just for show–they are actually a specialized covering called osteokeratoderm! like a cross between the velvet on a deer's growing antlers and a goat's horns, a sheath of highly vascularized, ever-growing keratinous tissue provides blood flow to layers of cartilage and bone beneath. this unique setup further insulates the beast from the elements while giving it a rugged surface to mount its icy weapons on; this is also how it can grow “claws” on parts of its body other than its actual digits. outside of guarding itself from frostbite, an individual can consciously redirect blood to this layer to signal other individuals, especially during mating displays or while defending territory.

i think the most important detail about merc is displayed very well in this particular piece of mhrise concept art. like my god man look at the size of that felyne compared to that fucking footprint
a piece of concept art for the game monster hunter rise, depicting a hunter with their palico and palamute tracking a goss harag across a snowy landscape. one interesting feature is the beast's footprints in the foreground, which dwarfs not only the other sets of footprints in the snow but the palico itself; the palico appears to marvel at the size of the tracks, as well.

The product of a crazy cat lady and her clowder of Grimalkyne companions, Merc's New World heritage has instilled in them a lifelong desire to find a similar kinship with nature on the old continent. This, combined with an enlightening (and mercifully brief) career as a guild receptionist, inspired them to devise a more heuristic approach to monster hunting altogether. Their current goal: compile the various monster dialects of the Old World and develop a translation system for hunters to use.
