With the dramatic escalation of USA imperialism since 1 January and increasing domestic repression - ICE agents, threats to executive salaries, a proposed blocks on corporate realestate purchases, we see a further descent into autocracy. Free and fair mid-term elections now appear unlikely.

There’s a suggestion that Trump is following the Monroe doctrine concerning spheres of influence. It’s an interesting concept but It’s also fanciful to suggest that a vainglorious megalomaniac is capable of sticking to one area of the globe.

Resolve Strategic: 54-46 to Labor (open thread) - The Poll Bludger
The first post-Bondi poll suggests real but limited damage for Labor on voting intention, and a solid hit to Anthony Albanese on personal approval.

Like many Governments, Australia has consistently underfunded the security and intelligence services, relying instead on partnerships like Five Eyes to fill the gap. This is an important review that hopefully identifies and corrects this gap.

An excellent article from the ABC and Jacob Greber. The demonstrates why the ABC is Australia’s most trusted news source. No hysteria, hyper-ventilation, outrage or demands for heads to roll; just a statement of facts and balanced opinion. #auspol
Albanese not the only one facing a reckoning over Bondi terror
While Albanese will forever struggle to shed the perception that he was too slow to recognise the threat to Australia's Jewish community — he is taking action.

America stands in the crotch of the Trousers of Time. One leg: messy democracy, bruised but alive. The other: order built on fear, where violence becomes normal. The stride is coming—history will hinge on which leg is chosen. Choose wisely America, you can’t hop back across the seam. #discworld

Why would anyone want the Liberal leadership right now? Assuming no massive policy or economic catastrophe, Labor should hold on in 2028. Interest rates ⬇️, Inflation ⬇️, living standards ⬆️. You’re looking at 6 years as oppo leader and losing an election. Not very motivating. #auspol

Everyone’s asking why the gov can’t just fix the cost of living. Truth is, they don’t set prices—markets do. Groceries, fuel, rent, power—these are shaped by global forces, not policy. Govs can ease the pain, but they can’t control the tide. That’s the bit no one says. #auspol

I’m a fan of Katy Kay and Anthony Scaramucci’s TRIP US podcast. I was gobsmacked at Katy’s analysis suggesting fawning prostration to deal with Trump. This is what got us here. Accepting a 6 times bankrupt realty TV show host is some kind of genius.

Marco Rubio insists that Zelensky is being petulant and obstructive in asking the guy that invaded his country to leave and give 100% of the stolen territory back to Ukraine as part of a peace settlement.

Rubio used to think Putin was an evil dictator. Rubio is a fraud.

Zelensky went with the expectation of peace and was bullied because he refused to prostrate himself in sycophancy. #ukraine

Ms. Mills is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stale and stagnant opposition to the Trump regime. States have rights in the American system of Government, and they should be rigorously defended, not ceded without challenge. Don’t be snowflakes, defend your rights.

It’s concerning that Rubio uses the language “joint venture” in reference to a deal with Ukraine. It’s a country, not a company. Governments are not “for profit” entities, they are for people, for safety, for security, for equality. This is how oligarchies become entrenched. #ukraine #defiance

Given that YouGov is part owned, albeit listed on the LSE, by a former Tory Party minister accused of suppressing polling results in 2017 that were “too favourable” to UK Labour, how accurate is this poll? Labor is in trouble, I can’t deny that, but how much trouble is questionable. #auspol
