presence: what a world we live in that steven soderbergh is beholden to no one. if he wants to make a film where the camera is a ghost, they give him money, if he wants to bring out a fassbender spy film like three weeks later, they give him more money. long may it continue.

red rooms: there was a point in this when i caught myself rooting for a clear sociopath to win enough bitcoin in online poker to buy a snuff film on a dark web auction

captain america brave new world: see at their best i loved these films but the only enjoyment i get from them now is trying to figure out whether actors were in the same room for their scenes and it all makes you feel like an eejit for ever actually liking any of it before.

anora: only sean baker could make a film with so much gary barlow rip so hard. sugar rush first half, brutal after hours-style second, gut-punch end, funny all the way through. well worthy if it ends up nicking best picture imho (apologies to hot frosty).

the order: they don’t make em like this anymore (but this time they did). the cut from nicholas hoult at the aryan nations rally to jude law at the kid’s birthday party - that’s cinema to me 🤌

memoir of a snail: wasnae really in the mood for this and though it was inarguably accomplished i found it an incredibly fucked film both to look at and to think about. merry christmas.

blink: nice wee documentary about a family whose kids are diagnosed with a retina defection that means they’ll eventually go blind travelling the world trying to cram in as many sights as possible but tbh all i could think was fuck going on holiday for that long with four weans

here: having the camera in the same position since the dawn of time is a cool idea for a film but when the writing’s this bad you’re essentially just stuck in an ikea advert for 66 million years. wish it was better but at least it’s interesting.

Do yourself a solid - it might not happen today or tomorrow but sometime in the next wee while you're going to want to read something on the site and you'll end up paying full price anyway.

It's the final day of The Herald's Black Friday offer - just £20 for the year.
