This isn’t true for health care. Attempts at moving in a European/socially democratic direction failed miserably in the 1940s and while ambitious, Medicare and Medicaid left out any “non-deserving” poor and capitulated heavily to hospitals and the AMA in a way that ignited health care inflation.
