Also to clarify stuff I get that I'm literally not answering the question, and instead just giving my take on the two sides found in the thread but I'm doing so in an attempt to facilitate the search for the ultimate definition (narrows it down)

Greetings. Here is my (very lengthy) (and probably unoriginal af, I'm a basic bitch ig) take on mascot horror.

TL;DR: There's 2 very different definitions for that one thing, its dumb, so I made up a shitty new term to try and fix it.
Massive block of text in comic sans ms font that reads: Imo the term mascot horror is used in improper manners and there should be a new term made for its close counterpart. What I mean is, even in this thread one can see two main conflicting definitions of what mascot horror is: 1- Horror content about an in-universe popular fictional (sometimes not) character made twisted. Doing so is usually a go-to for companies that plan to make revenue from heavy merchandising of their mascot(s). That type would feature stuff like FNaF, Bendy and whatnot but would thus exclude things like Hello Neighbor and Baldi's Basics 2- Horror content that features an iconic character design that can be deemed the game's "mascot". This is usually done intentionally, though the opposite can also be true as well. It would fit both the standard mascot horror titles we know, and also things like Hello Neighbor, Baldi's Basics, Slender Man... Problem with this one being we can stretch the term to also fit various other types of characters from franchises we don't commonly reffer to as mascot horror. Things such as Alien, Silent Hill (with Pyramid head), your typical slasher movie vilain... The distinction between these two is very important and should (in my opinion) be made even more apparent by creating a new term for the latter option. Something along the lines of "Icon horror", though the two could still be mistaken for one another due to the difference in meaning being insufficient. I ain't good at naming stuff but you get what I mean.
