“Men make their own history, but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under self-selected circumstances, but under circumstances existing already, given and transmitted from the past.”
Just passed by. Not sure if the photo accurately captures just how many cops there are on the street.

That’s actually how it was pronounced originally. John Forbes was a Scotsman, so when he likely pronounced it as ‘Pittsborough’.

Would you support a military-led coup d’état against the US government?

- Strongly support
- Somewhat support
- Neither support or oppose
- Somewhat oppose
- Strongly oppose
- Depends on the ideology of the conspirators
- Unsure / don’t care

“Before the disaster” adds such ominous energy to the picture.

My bus commute home is fucked because of the bridge closures. Every single day so far, the bus driver has let people off early because traffic is so jammed up.

Exactly. The trail section near I-279 is especially bad, those pillars are a bottleneck.

Highway removal & relocation is kind of a prerequisite for revitalizing downtown Pittsburgh. I-579 needs to be demolished, with the highway system reconfigured into a ring road setup (as Paris has done).

We have to build the city we want now, we can’t wait for it to happen naturally.

It should be demolished, and the right of way used to expand the river trail.

Obviously Cuomo has been thoroughly discredited at this point, but I find it funny how part of his campaign pitch was ‘Trump would love to have Mamdani as mayor, but he’s afraid of me’ and now Trump is signaling the exact opposite.

That’s because real ones wait for Bastille Day

Fun fact: The Three Sisters Bridges are a unique type of suspension bridge. Instead of using a chain, like the Golden Gate Bridge does, they are suspended by layered steel eyebars (those metal plates with circles on both ends).

The big 50501 protest is on Sunday, but I’m not sure if there’s a different one on Saturday.

Pittsburgh is not a conservative city, lol. There are Republicans in the suburbs & exurbs (just like NYC), but the city itself is reliably progressive.

That’s part of the Democrats electoral problem: they assume Americans are more conservative than in reality, and campaign to imaginary voters.

If the NS Savannah couldn’t pencil out, then I doubt that locomotive-based reactors will ever be viable. The answer is (as always) to put up the damn wires.

“A good way to get a Republican elected” is so delusional. It’s a senate seat in New York, and if he retires it would be a special election. No Republican is getting within 50 yards of that seat.
