The real value-add process looks something like this:
- Find out what people are doing.
- Understand why they are doing it.
- If there's a better thing to be doing, figure out why they are not doing that instead.
- Make the desirable behavior possible, visible, preferable, and understadable.

The thing you need to reply to is not "unread" (most of the time) it's read and needs to be replied to later. Mark as unread is never designed to be a good solution to this
