also whenever we check into hotels or such, we always get "enjoy your stay mr and mrs (partners last name)" and it irritates the hell out of me. like is there NO other reason two people would be traveling together?!?

this is very true! we live together, we pay bills together... what would a piece of paper do for us? (aside from insurance + those assorted reasons but we both have that worked out on our own)
