Medical physicist in Radiation Oncology. Originally from Italy, now in Seattle (University of Washington & Fred Hutch Cancer Center).
Back from the Flash and Particle Therapy Conference (FRPT) in Rome. I found it interesting, and the community attending it slightly differs from the usual Physics or RadOnc congress: fewer people from clinical practice, more radiobiologists and physicists working on radically new things.

Jakob Oden and colleagues from Raysearch published about an interesting survey about proton variable RBE.

Off to the FLASH Conference in Rome. frpt-conference.org
I will spend quite some time on planes in the next few days, but the meeting will be a great opportunity to reconnect with friends and colleagues in Europe. I hope to meet some of you there. #RadOnc #MedPhys

I don't have a strong opinion on the matter, but it is an interesting question and I agree that we should keep the door open to high risk science. (There is then the issue of differentiating "high risk" from "totally unrealistic even though it sells well" but it's a separate problem.)
1. Today I'm at a fascinating Santa Fe Institute meeting on Accelerating Science. Chiara Franzoni gave an excellent talk about what it takes to fund high risk science, and it left me thinking.

Suppose you’re progressive/left-ish (like me) & a white male techbro boomer (like me). Your social-media stream is going to be full of angry people attacking various aspects of what you are. So I wrote a piece about owning your privilege and sucking it up: www.tbray.org/ongoing/When...

I wonder whether I will ever understand America's fascination for Halloween and its aesthetics, which are way too macabre for my taste.

A take I found interesting on food production systems. Here and there it's getting personal, but it is worth reading. www.monbiot.com/2023/10/04/t...
