The American concentration camp on view Tuesday was erected within the Big Cypress National Preserve, traditional Miccosukee land. The tribe was not consulted, said Betty Osceola, a member and activist who lives a few miles from the camp’s entrance. She was one of hundreds of people protesting on the road outside the camp over the last several days as massive trucks streamed into the site. “People should be concerned about the secrecy of this,” Osceola told the Fort Myers News-Press. “It’s a big deal. Our ancestors were laid to rest in this area, and they talk about it like it’s a vast wasteland. It’s not.”

Am I reading this correctly? Bryn Mooser, "a serial entrepreneur," says a workshop built in 1916 was built "before electricity"?
One recent evening on the Eastside of Los Angeles, a couple hundred people gathered in a cavernous old soundstage to celebrate the arrival of a new AI studio — one of the nearly 100 now operating in Hollywood. Called Asteria Film Co., it was founded by Bryn Mooser, a serial entrepreneur, and his girlfriend, the actress and writer Natasha Lyonne. Mooser, 45, is tall with a sculpted jaw and salt-and-pepper beard; he fits the role of a rumpled yet elegant pitchman so well that Cartier shot an advertorial of him titled “The Entrepreneur.” He led me through the studio: a 25,000-square-foot collection of soundstages and a workshop built in 1916 by the producer Mack Sennett, who pioneered new uses of scenic backdrops in early filmmaking. In the lobby, he paused at a glass-encased architectural model of the studio as it looked when it was first built. “There was no roof because they were just using sunlight,” he told me. “It was before electricity.” As Mooser saw it, Asteria fit into a lineage of creatives who had ushered in new eras of filmmaking. He reminded me that Walt Disney was a technologist. So was George Lucas. “The story of Hollywood is the story of technology,” he said.

The strike wave impacted just about every major railroad in the United States, and elected officials and railroad companies responded by deploying local and state troops and privately hired militias. In addition, President Rutherford B. Hayes deployed federal troops to attack workers. “He actually used the provision of the constitution [regarding] insurrections,” says Troy Rondinone, a history professor at Southern Connecticut State University and author of The Great Industrial War: Framing Class Conflict in the Media, 1865-1950. “So he was basically saying this is an insurrection against the country.”

The argument that Trump represents an outlier seduces us to think less about the ongoing complexity and sheer hard work of democratic government in favor of simplistic judgements about what is or isn’t “who we are as Americans,” what is or isn’t “presidential,” and what does or doesn’t fit within “the norms” of American politics. It is no false equivalency with Trump or any contemporary figure to say that Washington was indeed, as a man who owned other people, tyrannical.
