Hooker Jr. is running against O'Brien over his courting of Trump compared to his past criticism of Trump and Teamsters leadership for failing to oppose him, shortfalls of the UPS contract and its enforcement, and the union's culture under O'Brien.

Sitting behind him clapping gleefully were two of the country’s top anti-Union politicians: Mike Pence and Paul Ryan. Trump’s words made you think he was looking out for America’s working class. But as we know, words mean nothing—It’s actions that matter. Labor including leaders from the AFL, AFT, the Steelworkers and SEIU all spoke out against these enemies of labor immediately. As for our General President James P. Hoffa, he was once again Missing in Action. Hoffa continues to be silent and give Trump and anti-labor politicians a pass as they dismantle what it has taken a generation for labor to build. Make no mistake, Trump is our enemy. We must take our partisan emotions out of it and look at the man’s actions. Trump supports National Right to Work. His NLRB has waged a war on policies protecting organizing, collective bargaining and they have rewritten labor law in favor of employers. Like Obama, the job growth Trump brags about is in the low wage service sector or gig economy. And his tax bill was simply a trillion dollar gift to corporations. A war is being waged on workers and Hoffa is not only refusing to fight, he won’t even answer the bell. Teamsters should never be divided by what party or candidate we as individuals support. It should be about who supports US. Teamster members deserve better. We refuse to remain silent as Trump dismantles all we have fought for. While reporting this story, Hooker received this racist, harassing voicemail at his union office. He became the first Black man to lead his local union in 2020 and he would be the first to lead the union if he wins
