“In Solidarity We Resist: Our Fight, Our Right!” What is this May 28 about and why must we care? As feminist theories and philosophies continous evolve, it had shown us the interconnectedness of oppression that harms us all; patriarchal, colonial, and capitalist. They are the structures that dictate who has access to healthcare, safety, and bodily integrity—often at the expense of women and other marginalized groups. Numerous examples of this can be found throughout history and sadly, it continues on in the modern day. The forced sterilization of indigenous women (a legacy of eugenics), the illegalization of abortion rights and the lack of maternal healthcare. It does not end there, for industries pushes the impoverished and indigenous people away from their own land in expense of their rights and well-being. Prison systems provide little to no dignity to those behind bars with poor living spaces and even poorer hygiene practices. Oppression also states who is deserving of care. The poor are limited because of the financial burden for healthcare, sex workers are excluded due to stigma, migrants are denied as a way of border patrol, lgbtqia+ people are discriminated against. And on top of that, the medical field is male centered in which the male body was often used in research that it eventually became the model that laid the foundations of medicine. This post is a bit late but helping to spread the word never will be. We must not litter, we must learn the habit of recycling, or how we would be tasked to create posters and slogans to advocate for the earth and warn people of climate change. Yet, here we are—still carrying the anxiousness of extreme unexpected floodings, smoldering heatwaves, sudden landslides and earthquakes. Sierra Madre, the Philippines longest mountain range and home to many endemic and rare plants, is under threat from mining and deforestation, which accelerate climate change, destroying water sources, and displacing indigenous communities. Our mountains act as a natural shield against typhoons by becoming a barrier for the wind. But Sierra Madre isn't the only one experiencing this. Multiple mountains are being bled dry because of the drive for profit, prioritizing extraction over sustainability. Corporations exploit land for minerals, turning forests into sacrifice zones and forcing farmers and indigenous peoples off their ancestral domains. Capitalism will always play a role in ecological destruction. In the Philippines, 6.8 million hectares of watersheds are susceptible to biodiversity loss, water pollution and deforestation however, 55% of agricultural watersheds that is critical for irrigation are without protected status. Apart from that, land based ecosystems 30% of carbon emissions and when forests are cleared or burned, they release the carbon that they have stored. Mining alone contributes 4-7% of global carbon emissions through deforestation, fossil-fuel-heavy operations, and toxic waste. Capitalism treats nature as a commodity—but biodiversity loss harms the poor first, as seen when landslides from denuded mountains bury communities. But what can we do against this? We can start small, join environmental campaigns and demand policy change such as pushing for more climate justice. We can support indigenous-led resistance as most communities are experiencing intimidation, harrassment and displacement. The land must always be for the people and never for corporations. Recently, I've stumbled upon a post depicting a hand with its ring finger and middle finger covered in blood. It was captioned, "Yung sinabing wag, pero mapilit ka." Safe to say, it was clear what the messaging was. At first I gave the post the benefit of the doubt, perhaps it was referring to the condemnation of the act but when I opened the comment section, it wasn't. There was no trigger warning, no clarification, no other underlying message but a comment from the artist that resonates with the idea of "Pag hindi para sayo, wag ka dito." Note that this post is not a call out, accusation nor insult. This is also not about judging the character of one who posted the art. This is for educational purposes, to share valuable information for personal growth and hopefully for others to see perspectives that shape our interactions and societal norms. People seem to excuse sexist jokes or rape jokes with "dark humor". I have said this once before and I will say it again because I stand by it: jokes should be funny, not trivializing harm. Dark humor requires intelligence, self-awareness, irony, sarcasm, and self-deprecation. Using topics like rape as punchlines is insensitive, uncreative and unfunny. Eh ano naman? Bakit mo dapat papakialaman ang sense of humor ng iba? Hindi ito tungkol sa pangengealam o pagpupulis sa mga gawain ng iba kundi tungkol sa pagbibigay importansya, paglelehitimo, at respeto para sa mga biktima nito. Ang gawing uri ng katatawanan o biro ng sexual violence o rape ay ang produkto ng kultura ng rape or rape culture. Pero ano nga ba ang Rape Culture? It is a societal environment where sexual violence is normalized, excused, or even trivialized through attitudes, behaviors, and systemic structures. Today, we are reminded of the painful past of Palestinian displacement but also their unbroken resilience as generations of refugees have kept the keys to the homes of their ancestors, a potent symbol of their right to return; a right under international law but refused for 77 years. But the Nakba is a more than a narrative of loss. It's also a narrative of Palestinian resilience. In order for imperialism to survive, it must dehumanize and destroy. Yet, against all odds, throughout the decades, Palestinians have found hope; creating farms and schools within the rubble. They have shared to us their history and mobilized the world for freedom. Palestinians have made memory resistance. Nakba is not solely about the past; it's about the ongoing struggle for a future where all Palestinians can live with dignity. We stand in solidarity with Palestinians by educating ourselves about their past, boycotting complicit corporations, and calling for political action.
