Explicit instruction is a coordinated set of design and delivery tactics - a problem-solving approach - guided by working models of learner readiness and task complexity that adapt in response to observable changes in student performance.

It’s not just the part where you talk.

The theme of this conference was “Next steps in the science of reading” and I made the argument that we need to apply what we’re doing in early literacy - explicit systematic instruction to manage working memory - to everything else we teach because learning is learning.

I helped put together this conference for teachers about direct and explicit instruction - a method that is both research-based and frequently mischaracterized by the overlords of education.

From what I just learned, not having taught it either but hearing a lot of criticism of it, is it’s an example of minimally guided instruction. I use the definition given by advocates of inquiry in the literature: a cycle that replicates the inquiry process of the field.

If you’re going to invest in an instructional coaching program, you have to train coaches to do coaching cycles effectively. We have intensive one-day training courses coming up in May that focus on modeling and practicing the core of what coaches do. See you there!

Schools are buying my book in bulk and doing book clubs for it. You can get discounts by going through the publisher, John Catt. I’d love to pop in for a Zoom session if you’re running one of these with a group of educators.

So you know how you kind of just teach the material directly and explicitly despite your university telling you, directly and explicitly, that you should let the kids inquire into the material and make their own discoveries? Well, this book is for you!

What an amazing time presenting on explicit instruction to 1,200 people. First the @steplab.bsky.social announcement and now this, it’s cray. In a time when so much is put on teachers, schools find it so refreshing to return to an emphasis on teaching.

📣 I’m delighted to announce I am joining team @steplab.bsky.social as Director for North America!

Just like me, Steplab is dedicated to providing evidence-based PD for teachers and their students. 🚀

Can’t wait for N American schools to benefit from Steplab too!
