Mesmerising, spellbinding, powerful, moving, compelling: words can't really do justice to this performance tonight by Florence Odumosu at Theatre Royal Wakefield.

Nice to see a hedgehog down the bottom of the garden the other evening. Haven't seen one for ages.

Fascinating account of silent film star William Haines who, as an actor, survived the transition to talkies but not the shift in attitudes against openly gay men in Hollywood in the 1930s. Wisecraker: The Life and Times of William Haines, Hollywood's First Openly Gay Star, by William J Mann, 1998.

It's been an absolutely spiffing day. A bit of Agatha Christie this morning, a touch of Art Deco in the afternoon, and a wonderful dinner this evening. But now to bed - with a good detective story ('Murder on the Links' featuring Hercule Poirot, of course).

Acquired an original 'Official Guide' to the British Empire Exhibition 1924 as part of my research for a new talk. Pleased to see that Sirdar, a Wakefield-based company still operating today, was one of the exhibitors.

Terrific play this evening at Theatre Royal Wakefield - funny, poignant and cutting. A trip down memory lane. Handbagged - on until Saturday. Recommended.

Fascinating visit to Birdsall House (Malton) this afternoon via the 'Invitation to View' programme organised by @historic-houses.bsky.social. Shown round by members of the Willoughby family whose home it is, we saw art, furniture and antiques. Finished off with tea and biscuits - and a guide book!

Eating out with the @wakefieldcivicsoc.bsky.social Dining Club last night at Delphi, a Greek restaurant in the city centre. Looking forward to the next one now!

A packed house for today's YHACS Annual General Meeting in Harrogate, chaired by Margaret Hicks Clarke. Good to see so many people from across the Y&H region attending.

Watched this last night - can't believe I've not seen it before. Excellent evocation of the 1980s AIDS crisis in New York. Based on the play by Larry Cramer. Not an easy watch.

Out with the @wakefieldcivicsoc.bsky.social Dining Club last night. Another enjoyable evening despite the icy weather.

Enjoying this on the BBC iPlayer - 'Renaissance: The Blood and the Beauty', a 3-part docudrama with Charles Dance.

Last night, I went to the ball: Cinderella at Theatre Royal Wakefield - truly excellent and very funny. Do go if you can.

Finished this last night. Enjoyed it enormously but, gosh, the ending. I'll say no more as I don't want to spoil it for others but it wasn't what I was expecting.

Looking better now.

Enjoyed my visit to the National Coal Museum this evening for their Light Up Festival. A bit chilly(*) but met quite a few people I know while listening to the Have Edge Brass Band. Good to see so many people there.

Really good turnout for tonight's @wakefieldcivicsoc.bsky.social presentation by Jane Ellis on the history of railway posters.

Currently reading 'Our Evenings' by Alan Hollinghurst (one of my favourite writers). Totally absorbing. (Repost with typo corrected!)

Had a meeting here today. Wakefield Cathedral, just before it closed for the day so unusually quiet.

Catching up on Saturday night's Strictly Come Dancing, from the world famous Blackpool Tower Ballroom. Reminds me of my visit there just over three weeks ago. (Sadly, I didn't have time to dance......)
