I personally think they were starved and abused. They were servants to the parish priests, treated cruelly, and took it out on the kids in their charged.

I had my head smashed against the blackboard b/c I diagrammed a sentence incorrectly. Sister Domitilla (her name🤷♀️) then made me stand there until I figured it out.
My experience in Catholic school was the sole reason I became a public school teacher - no kid in my class was ever going to be shamed.
