Wife, mom, elementary teacher, fan of doing math with kids.
I did my BSO in June and plan to do my preventative DMX this summer with a flat closure. My mom opted for reconstruction and thinks it’s odd I’m perfectly fine with going flat. The alternatives don’t seem that appealing- I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who is ok with flat.

It has been fun pressing them to think beyond the basics and predetermined options. Our science fair is coming up and I posed it as a perfect opportunity to merge a project with what we were doing if they decided to do the fair. So far, only one student took the advice.

How fun! I challenged my 5th graders to make a proof for why this works. I was impressed with that they came up with. I’ll have to show them your explanation!

Oh, and we threw in a little conceptual work with averaging and probability. It’s been a fun couple of week!

What makes graphs misleading? Can we spot a bad graph? What is the best way to represent data accurately and in a way people can understand? Fun questions to wrestle with.

So, we are digging deep into different types of graphical representations thanks to @youcubed and are spending time with slow reveal graphs as well.

Additionally, I’ve noticed that students usually are only asked to analyze data that is already graphed OR they are constructing a specific type of graph with a set of data. They aren’t familiar with having a data set and having to decide how to organize it.
