2nd in Dept, Leader of Learning (T&L), Secondary Mastery Specialist. Avid reader and mum to 2 ND boys so life is busy! East Midlands.
In #MathsToday and P5 at that, my Y8s explored unequal sharing and ratio. Using the algebra tiles for shapes/colours under the visualiser. They smashed it!

What’s more first day back than maths themed nails…..

I’ve been deep diving into homework (or home learning) to improve our policy for the new year. An amazing trip to Friesland School today to see what they’ve implemented this year. Lots to ponder #alwaysimproving

In Y9 #MathsToday we used a beautiful @mathsbox.bsky.social structured problem solving question, linking our work on trapezia, unit conversions for volume and volume of prisms with rates (not yet taught). A team effort and so much fun!

Today’s thought from Y9. Why is a hemisphere not a semi sphere? But then we didn’t like that, and decided we preferred hemicircle. Have since discovered it’s Latin vs Greek!

Graduated from the @ncetm.bsky.social Secondary Mastery Specialist programme today as a cohort 8. Complete with a party hat! A great 2 years of continuous PD. Thank you Helen and Richard #alwayslearning

Last work group today, it’s been a great year working with the schools involved and seeing how they’ve brought their learning into the classroom @em-mathshub.bsky.social

Excited to see the paper today and see how the students feel about it. I both love and fear paper 1 day!! Good luck Y11s

In #MathsToday my Y8s were exploring volume with cubes. One student was struggling to appreciate the ‘slices’ for depth so I found an old favourite, Boss Maths Geogebra file splitting cuboids in layers in all 3 directions! Student nailed it by the end of the lesson.

I’ve had a wonderful day at the @ttctrust.bsky.social Conference Day, both learning and presenting. I would share my lovely new journal but I left it on my desk! This girl loves new stationary and filling it with new insights from the sessions today. #YourPLMatters #smashingit

Interesting twilight from the NCETM tonight, and excited to explore the new Oak resources to share with our PSHE lead

Really enjoyed leading whole staff training today on gaining 100% attention, focusing on empty hands. Great deliberate practice session

In #MathsToday (yesterday actually because I fell asleep!) I welcomed a school I’ve been working with to come and see me teach my Y8s 2 step equations with algebra tiles. The number of them that were moving towards the formal written method by then end shows the power of manipulatives!

Not in school today, but completing my PD Lead sessions and finishing my coursework. All submitted so just feedback and tweaks now hopefully!!!

In #mathstoday Y11 were going through their P2 mock, getting feedback and correcting to be able to apply to the non-shadow paper. The shadow papers from Pearson are so useful to help students learn from past papers

In #mathstoday Y9 explored unit ratio where the numbers started as values less than 1. Sure we can divide by that number but is there an alternative?

Leaving for a school visit at lunchtime is made all that sweeter by the beautiful drive!! Visiting a school near Castleton for @em-mathshub.bsky.social
March 10, 2025 at 6:34 PM
In #mathstoday Y8 took their first steps from using algebra tiles for single step equations into the pictorial or abstract and we looked at when/why we can’t use tiles

In #mathstoday Y9 were comparing finance deals on cars, comparing to the value after depreciation and working out the percentage loss. So many layers of percentage practice in one!

Y10 tackled map scales today with ratio tables, we looked at the vertical and horizontal multipliers but a few found the relationship on the diagonal for unit scales. A lovely time playing with some maths! I do love a ratio table (or table of joy !!)

In all seriousness, what better practice can there be of modelling than modelling in front of peers to receive feedback. We looked at dividing fractions, factorising quads, sector area, Pythag, ratio and surds.

I’m sure my first post here should be something profound, or insightful. Instead, here’s a picture from Semester Review day last week, working in department on modelling whilst drinking my free hot chocolate from the coffee van!
