When setting up the classroom, have we become overly focused on keeping everything neat and orderly? Do we automatically group similar items together and line them up tidily, without pausing to consider how children actually move through the space and engage with the resources?

Today’s Reflection When setting up the classroom, have we become overly focused on keeping everything neat and orderly? Do we automatically group similar items together and line them up tidily, without pausing to consider how children actually move through the space and engage with the resources? When we insist on things being “tidy,” are we designing the environment around adult preferences rather than children’s real, everyday needs? Is our version of “order” truly supporting learning or is it more about helping us feel in control and comfortable? As we plan the layout, have we carefully considered how children navigate the room and which materials they use most often? Are high use resources easily accessible? Do learning areas flow naturally into one another, allowing for seamless transitions and sustained play? Is the presentation of materials clear, inviting, and purposeful encouraging curiosity, independence, and decision making? Or does it simply appear well organised from an adult perspective? Perhaps the most important question is not whether the classroom looks neat, but whether the environment genuinely supports children’s independence, engagement, and growth.
