My advice: read everything beforehand... The module, the guides, everything! I ended up skipping 1 very cool NPC, butchering a (minor) location and having to think really hard on how to introduce some lore that I should have foreshadowed way better... If I had read it all earlier.

I will try to discuss the changes I made to the original module and the things I learned along the way about DMing.

(Originally it was going to be #Strahdterday, but I forgot to post like 10 Saturdays in a row so I decided to abandone that)

Not to oversimplify a really cool debate but my usual strategy is populating the dungeon with a bunch of the "killer robot" type, led by an evil individual with whom PCs can negotiate or eventually fight (in self defense?). And that evil individual doesn't necessarily reflect its whole race.

You got great answers already, I def. agree with checking local options such as game shops. They often set stuff up.

On top of that I'd say start small... Try a short adventure like a one shot or a lvl 1-5 campaign. It's easier to commit to a couple of months of regular games than a whole year+ ;)

Day one and I'm already missing an edit button... I was considering "sheepherder" because it reminds me of Lan in the Eye of the World, which I finished recently... I went with "shepherd" for simplicity but ended up butchering the spelling...
