The lesson here is I need to start bringing the box to events. That way, when someone asks if I have one, I can say open it and say, "Take as many as you like," like one of the cool houses on Halloween.

I do like it in terms of providing this context that's like, "Ok, we're already at dime in MI. Where do we go from here if we're going to improve things?" And I think that the report is trying to highlight some opportunities on that front.

I really liked the tidbit in Keith Matheny's Detroit Free Press story that pointed out Oregon overtook Michigan in 2023, after upping its nickel deposit to a dime in 2017. That kind of hurt my state pride as a Michigander, but...

So the question the report set out to answer wasn't as much "Do bottle bills work?" as it was "Why isn't Michigan's bottle bill as effective as it used to be?"

Thanks for the comments! I hear you on the "litter" point—that's definitely something I could have done in the release.

I would say that the report that inspired the news story is very much focused on the bottle bill in the state, rather than bottle bills in general. css.umich.edu/publications...
