Shout-out to the eighth grade math team at North Buncombe Middle School! These kids made the journey to Western Carolina University today with about 200 others from all over the mountain counties and crushed the Level 1 and Level 2 competitions.

I'm on the finance committee for our neighborhood, specifically helping to figure out how much money to save for future road paving. I want to get our street renamed "Fractal Avenue" so I can make the joke "The paving of the road won't cost too much, but the sidewalks are going to bankrupt us!" 🤓

The Great Backyard Bird Count is almost over and I think the tally for Liz and me is going to be these 41 different species observed from our screened porch. I thought we were at an even 40, but then got the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker in the last hour!

Fun exercise with my middle-school math club students: calculate your end-of-career salary as an engineer if inflation is 3% per year and your typical raise is 2% above inflation. Assume they work until they're 62. Without a calculator, would you care to guess the answer?

Very proud of these superstars! This was from two weeks ago, when North Buncombe Middle School finished third overall in the BCS MathCounts competition, with 6 students winning individual honors and another four missing the podium by a single point.
