The films taken on their own were entertaining, with some decent production.
As an adaptation of the books they failed to capture the feel of Tolkien. The books are scholarly and wise. whilst the films are action movies with some of the same characters and events in them.

This is in fact a key principle in quantum mechanics. Books will always expand to fill (and overflow) the available space.
