I had heard of Lovecraft for years thanks to Fangoria magazine but when I saw the Del Rey book "Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre" in the local Barnes & Noble I freaked and begged my parents to buy it for me (I was in 6th Grade).
Loved the craft ever since.
