If you already have a phone and keep using it, then you're not contributing to their bottom line. I think that still counts as opting out. Don't need to upgrade, or if you do, buy a used one

He's elderly and sick. At this point he's just a front for what's going on, signing things put in front of him. At some point he will become too much of a liability, and then he will find out even he is expendable.
