End of an era today in Manchester: last day of work at HOME for my pal Garry Watson, who started as a projectionist at Cornerhouse just over forty years ago - the last man standing from the opening of the original venue. Cheers, Garry!

It's the 72nd anniversary of TV landmark The Quatermass Experiment, and if you only buy two books this year about Quatermass and Nigel Kneale, buy @tobyhadoke.bsky.social's (and mine, obviously).

The distinctive score for The Stone Tape – sound and recording being key to the whole play, of course – was created by the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop, specifically Glynis Jones in collaboration with Workshop head Desmond Briscoe.

A remake of The Stone Tape for BBC2 was planned in 2012, to be written by Matthew Graham (Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes) and directed by Peter Strickland (Berberian Sound Studio,
In Fabric, Flux Gourmet).

In 2018, actor Hattie Morahan, Andrew's half-sister, appeared as Lady Lavinia Hassall in the BBC Radio 4 remake of The Road..

The Stone Tape first aired on Christmas Day 1972. It's an odd coincidence that, 12 years later, Christopher Morahan's son Andrew, by then a successful 26 year-old pop promo director, made the memorable video for Wham!'s Last Christmas.

The Stone Tape (working title: Breakthrough), was commissioned by Christopher Morahan in his capacity as the BBC's Head of Plays. He'd worked with Kneale before, having directed The Road in 1963 and a remake of Kneale's adaptation of Nineteen Eighty-Four in 1965.

Sir Timothy was played by James Maxwell, who went on to become one of the founding artistic directors of Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre. He died in 1995. (If you're #teambeliever, his ghost is now said to haunt the Royal Exchange.)

Kneale's lost 1963 TV play The Road was another precursor to The Stone Tape. Set in 1770, it centres on the supposed haunting of woods in England.

There's plenty to mark Quatermass and the Pit out as a precursor to The Stone Tape, not least a psychically-sensitive female scientist and a revealing search through ancient parish records.

The 1958-9 BBC TV serial Quatermass and the Pit, one of Kneale's most celebrated works, is a major example of the writer exploring science in conflict with the supernatural.

Both The Patter of Tiny Feet and You Must Listen feature teams of professionals in a contemporary setting, faced with the issue of a haunting.

The original version of You Must Listen is now lost, but it was remade for BBC Radio 4 by @bafflegabble.bsky.social in September 2023.

Kneale's 1952 radio play You Must Listen also feels like a prototype for The Stone Tape, with telephone engineers tackling the issue of a solicitor's faulty phone line. (SPOILER: the fault is that it's haunted.)
