I didn't know that as my answer was merely a reply to what to me seemed a general question about why are places that sell cars called dealerships. It seems you knew the answer all along but choose to not distinguish the difference...? There's no need to be a smart @## about it.

Just like a drug 'dealer' where you buy cars is called a "dealership" because these businesses are essentially authorized retailers who are contracted by automakers to sell their vehicles, and the term "dealer" reflects this role as a middleman in the transaction.
