I think they had lead "additives" for the transition. Think about that. There was also a conversion kit so it could run on unleaded gas. BUT, the additive was cheap, so I am thinking I know what ppl did. At least initially.

You know my first car. !972 canary yellow convertible beetle. No pics atm. The steering wheel also shook between 68 and 72mph, settling down around 75. Max speed 85 downhill with a tail wind. Sold after graduating, the person who got it was driving it when a red light runner t-boned it. She lived.
