Love these photographs by @simoncroberts.com, that appear in a new book, After London, published by the people at Hoxton Mini Press. Not wholly sure they "invite us to imagine a future transmuted by climate crisis", however, regardless as to whether they do or don't, they're some first-class work.

Three years ago to the day the morning arrived enveloped in fog – far more suitable for Halloween than today’s bright sunshine. And as I was working in the office next door I took a few minutes to photograph this building - the Exorcist’s House, hunkered down in the shadow of St Nicholas’ Chapel.

It's taken an age to do so, but this afternoon Mrs Weir and I managed to see a goldcrest, rather than just hear them up in the trees taunting us. Remarkably, we spotted three of them together in a hedge just three or four feet from us - a red-letter day :) © Francis C. Franklin CC-BY-SA-3.0

Just completing a quick audit of hagstones here at Weir HQ, given that we’re heading slowly closer towards the 31st October. Thanks to time well spent on various UK beaches over the last year we continue to remain witch-free :)

Another potential gift to myself from the people at Twentieth Century Posters. A poster from 1951, showing my home county looking very handsome, and designed by Gordon Burrows. Just need to raise the £650 asking price.

Reminded me of my Crackerjack Book of Games from the early 1970s (I think, can't put my hands on it right now), which included some activities a little low-octane even for me :)

Reminded me of a ghost I found washed up on the beach at Spurn Point last year.

In the garden after work – largely losing the battle (which is half the fun) – intrigued by the number of grasshoppers leaping out of my way. Look up to the sky to find a circumzenithal arc (I think) directly above me.

The butterflies have been thin on the ground so far this year so it’s good to see the echinacea flowers encouraging them to visit.

Four of the new Penguin additions I picked up on our travels in Wales last week.

For more than a moment I wondered what would be involved in a goth birthday?

Relocating for the week.

As a huge fan of David Gentleman – I’m enormously pleased to bag a copy of Saint George and the Dragon – A Mummer’s Play by John Longstaff with woodcuts by David Gentleman. (And apologies to the New Hanover County Public Library in Wilmington, North Carolina - I hope you’re it expecting it back!)

The always welcome arrival of The Penguin Collector (issue #103). I’m currently undecided whether to steal the headline for the name of my next avant-garde jazz quintet, or the possible title of the first of a trio of arthouse cinema happenings. Decisions decisions.

Another letterhead from my new collection (sorry). This time from The Farmer & Stock-Breeder encouraging newsagents to order extra copies of their November 8th issue because it will contain a “MAGNIFICIENT FREE CHART showing how to judge sheep”. Wonder if the people @themerl.bsky.social have a copy?

I picked up a bundle of papers from a local auctioneers yesterday, they specialise in fairly humdrum house clearances but treasure can be found. The bundle of papers includes some really handsome bits and pieces including this letterhead from D C Thomson & Co Ltd (home to the Beano) from the 1930s.

Wondering whether NASA can nudge it towards us rather than away?

An email from the people at Twentieth Century Posters always prompts discussions to occur with the Finance Team here at Weir HQ. This poster in particular, designed by Andre Amstutz for the British Travel Association in 1965, would look mighty fine on one of our walls.

Mrs Weir always enjoys our holidays.

I always like to invest in a local paper whenever I’m elsewhere because they rarely fail to entertain.

Still haven't overcome the social anxiety of this new place yet - maybe I've done my time :/ Shame if that's the case because sometimes hidden away in the flatlands it's nice to connect to the wider world.

Not sure how I missed Bridget Christie's The Change when the first series was broadcast, so I'm glad to say that the arrival of the second series has meant I've now resolved that particular error of judgement - and I absolutely loved it. Such a tonic against the interminable bleakness elsewhere.
