4) Sorry for the (four part!) rant. Obviously I’m speaking from years of my own experience. Your mileage may vary and I hope Mr. Tobin is one of the gracious pros out there who welcomes and encourages the noobs who work with words instead of pictures.

3) The pros don’t read what the ams bring them (jeez, even when there’s some relationship there). Not enough time, too much on my plate, even if I love it I have no pull with editors, you should - somehow - bankroll your own indie book, yaddayaddayadda.

2) Yes, there are some legal issues, but even including a signed, all-encompassing release form still gets you a friendly wince and a “sorry, I can’t look at that.”

Portfolios can be looked at in seconds and talent assessed on the go, but the writer is screwed.

1) This is a nice concept. If speaking of comics, though, it writers have it much harder.

Whether through friendly correspondence/social meetups or the painful “cold call” interactions at events, there is no professional that will accept or read a non-established writer’s work.
