Lincoln’s words at Gettysburg called for ‘government of the people, by the people, for the people.’ Black Americans have fought TIRELESSLY to make sure those words are true, which has impacted ALL people. Recent events prove to us that this fight is far from over. Are you ready to keep fighting?

And after the war? Our people took ‘a new birth of freedom’ into their own hands by creating schools, building businesses, and fighting for the right to vote. The Reconstruction era was proof that the ideals of Lincoln’s address were were made iconic by our continued fight for liberation.

Our freedom didn’t come solely from speeches or proclamations. Enslaved Africans freed themselves by escaping plantations, sabotaging Confederate efforts, and joining the fight. They turned the Civil War into a battle for emancipation.

The Gettysburg Address came at a pivotal moment during the Civil War. By 1863, Black men were already fighting for their own freedom. Over 180,000 African Americans would serve in the Union Army by the war’s end—risking their lives to actualize the statement that ‘all men are created equal.’
