This dates back to 1987, but even as compliance is becoming more high tech, I often think of Brian Molony. Mandatory block leave, segregation of duties, robust audit and testing - all of these controls were lacking in Molony’s tale, and these issues can plague organisations to this day.

This is the gripping account of a branch banking employee who embezzled millions from a major Canadian bank, all to fuel a cross-border gambling obsession.

(Side note: It was such a great story that they ultimately made a movie of it, “Owning Mahowny”, starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman!)

Reading the first item on Thinking Machines, I am reminded of the South Sea bubble, in which the company issued shares for “carrying out an undertaking of great advantage, but nobody to know what it is.”

Don’t know what made me make that connection. Funny how the brain works sometimes. 😉
