We remained watching and wondering until the north tower fell a short time later. The smoke and dust cloud blanketed lower manhattan. You may have seen photos of the dust cloud but you haven't smelled it. That stinging toxic odor of burning paint and plastic lingered in the air for weeks.

When the south tower fell, people screamed in horror. I remember seeing tears in my neighbor's eyes. I'll never forget her face. It felt "wrong" to see just one tower still standing.

People were on the roofs of all the buildings around us watching. My neighbors wondered aloud what we should do. Should we go help? Should we flee? Will there be more planes? Can the FDNY even handle this kind of fire? Of course. They're the most well trained and bravest firefighters in the country.

It was surreal view. When the second plane hit, it was clear that we were witnessing a historical moment. I ran down to grab my camera (see photo).
