This is why I'm not generally in favour of remasters as they tend to lead to the erasure of originals, or at best, they are relegated to becoming DLC for newer versions.

This is not preservation, just a cynical cash grab, ironically by a company that is not even the original it claims to be.

With the 30th anniversary of Windows 95's launch, I was reflecting on what seismic change this was at the time.

Back then, Win 3x was this weird side environment for dull business stuff, and we didn't really understand why Microsoft insisted on pushing it onto us - all the good stuff ran on DOS.

Coincidently, just the other day, I uploaded a couple of missing Gold Box games, Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday & Matrix Cubed.

You can get them here:

No. If I buy it, I keep it.

Total Distortion.

Peak Windows 3x 'multimedia' gaming, and so 90s in every way.

Pretty sure I only played the demo back in the day, but it stuck with me, and years later I picked up the actual game and was not disappointed.

2026 is the (half) year of the Linux desktop.

Starting the move from Windows by repurposing a £26, Windows 10, HP T630 thin client I was using for emulation to be an almost daily Linux Mint driver.

The integrated graphics will hold it back for some games, but it's a first step away from Microsoft.

Probably my favourite Indy adventure, (yes, even more than the Fate of Atlantis), although this level was probably one of the hardest things I've ever had to beat.

(And then I had to do it again to record this video)

Good to see Freelancer is so popular at the top of GOGs dreamlist. However, you don't need to wait.

You can get it My Abandonware and is one of the easier games to get working on modern PCs - it installs and runs straight from the CD image.

Connoisseur of classic games, or just someone whose backlog stretches back far too many years...? 🤔

Still love this game.

Push up the realism settings, allow no restarts, see how long I last.

Name a game you have 100+ hours in.

Amazing how many hours can be lost trying to get the perfectly modded game rather than playing the actual game...

#DOSember

The mid 90s saw First-Person Shooters move away from the arrow keys for movement, to WASD, most likely popularized by Quake in 96.

For some reason, 1995's Terminator: Future Shock's default "A, Left Shift, Z, X" didn't catch on...

Picked up a couple of HP T610 thin clients for £15 & £30

Plan is to use the larger 'Plus' as an offline Windows XP gaming PC, the other will run DOSBox, on Linux.

Not sure on how I'll get XP on yet, going to try using Easy2Boot, but they boot to Linux on a USB which is a start.

Space Marine 2 doing so well got me thinking of a less successful Warhammer 40,000 adaptation, the un-released Dark Crusaders.

Despite a promising start, it's quite broken, but you can still try it here:

A few words that I once wrote about the original System Shock, now 30 years old.

Good to see that the original Dark Forces is still available to purchase. Remasters shouldn’t be erasing originals

Works well with the community project “The Force Engine” (TFE) if you want a few quality of life improvements and optional enhancements.

In the meantime, while we all wait for the Discworld / King Charles business to be sorted, they can be downloaded, ready to play on the latest versions of Windows, from here:

After an enjoyable Istanbul section, I feel like Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb slightly loses its way in the middle part due to repetitive levels and rail shooter sections (although the stealth bit is quite good).

It does however introduce Wu Han, tying the game into the Temple of Doom film.

Chronologically, the first of Indy’s adventures is Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb (2003).

First thoughts, so far, are that it certainly captures the essence of what makes an Indiana Jones adventure. Plenty of globe-trotting, fist fights, and “Nazis – I hate these guys”

I recently began an attempt at playing (almost) all Indiana Jones games. Aside from the number of years the games cover, it also struck me with the diverse genres that the games can be found in.

There’s action games, arcades, platformers, point and click adventures, even a text adventure.
