Education Minister Jason Clare says moves by Instagram to beef up it the controls on teenagers' accounts show big tech companies can protect children online "if they want to". Instagram's parent company, Meta, announced overnight a range of changes to Teen Accounts in Australia, the US, UK and Canada, including restricting them in line with PG-13 movie ratings. Of course, this is happening two months before all Australian children aged under 16 are meant to be booted from social media as part of the government's ban. Clare said Instagram's changes did not diminish the government's desire to platforms fully implement the ban from what he described as the "cesspit of social media". "All the pressure is on parents at the moment that are trying to get their kids out of this," Clare said. "The pressure needs to be put on companies like Instagram and all the other social media companies to help us out, help parents out, help our kids out," he said. Education Minister Jason Clare says a national standard on bullying won't necessarily "re-invent the wheel" but provide help to teachers and schools to nip it in the bud. Ministers from across the country will meet on Friday to consider the new standard and be presented with the findings of an anti-bullying rapid review. "This review, which was led by two experts in this area ... they've said a big part of the problem is often that it takes too long after the bullying starts for the school to act. There are schools that do great jobs here, but this is a national problem," he told Sunrise. "We need a national standard." He says parents are wanting schools to act faster while parents are asking for more tools and assistance in shutting it down earlier. "So not trying to reinvent the wheel, but trying to make sure that the best approaches are applied everywhere and everyone's on the same page." Federal, state and territory education ministers will consider a proposal for a new national standard on anti-bullying when they meet on Friday. Communications Minister Anika Wells and eSafety commissioner Julie Inman Grant are also expected to brief the ministers ahead of the social media ban coming into force in December. The government ordered the anti-bullying rapid review back in February. Co-chairs Dr Charlotte Keating and Professor Jo Robinson will present their findings and recommendations to the meeting. Education minister Jason Clare says complaints about online bullying have increased by 450 per cent in the last five years. "The review reminds us bullying doesn’t stop when the school bell rings any more. Today it can follow you all the way home after school. The internet means that you can be bullied now at any time, day or night, and anyone can see it."

Following Thursday's deadly attack at a synagogue in Manchester all police forces in England and Wales are offering additional support to the 538 synagogues and Jewish community sites across the country. The new powers will be "brought forward as soon as possible", the Home Office said. While the right to protest is fundamental "this freedom must be balanced with the freedom of their neighbours to live their lives without fear", Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said. Senior officers will be able to consider the "cumulative impact" of previous protests, the Home Office said, which could mean they instruct organisers to hold events elsewhere if a site has seen repeated demonstrations. Anyone who breaches these conditions will risk arrest and prosecution, it said.
