However if screen time is replacing social isolation, rumination or other negative activities then it will likely have a more positive impact.

More study is needed to understand how individual traits and vulnerabilities can shape how digital experiences affect young people.

Internet use & screen time can be both beneficial & harmful to children's mental health.

If it involves exposure to harmful content or interactions, replaces healthy activities such as exercise, in-person socialising or sleep, then it will have a negative impact.

Did you know that screen time, and time spent online, doesn't directly translate to mental health outcomes in children?

The experiences had, & the activities screen time is replacing, have more impact than the amount of time spent looking at a screen.

There are many factors that can influence the development of depression but this discovery might help explain why young women are at higher risk than young men.

You can read more about these findings here: www.mqmentalhealth.org/research-hel...

The researchers found that girls with depression symptoms had lower levels of the protective compound which is called kynurenic acid.

The ‘kynurenine pathway’ is a series of chemical reactions that processes tryptophan, found in foods.
When tryptophan is broken down, it can take two routes in the brain: one protective and the other damaging.

📢NEW RESEARCH ALERT

New research from MQ's IDEA project has found that a biological pathway relevant for brain activity may help explain why teenage girls are more likely to experience depression than boys.

Depression is twice as common in women than men and often develops in adolescence.

❓So what do these findings mean?

For people struggling with an eating disorder, understanding that suicidality may have a genetic root can be validating.

Plus, if healthcare staff check people with ED's for suicidal ideation it could speed up access to the right support.

The shared genetic component doesn’t necessarily mean that someone with an eating disorder will experience suicidal thoughts.

But, it can increase a persons vulnerability to both disordered eating and suicidal ideation.

📢NEW RESEARCH ALERT

*Content Warning: This thread mentions suicidal ideation.

MQ researchers at @kingsioppn.bsky.social examined data from 20,000 people and found a shared genetic susceptibility which can partially explain the overlap between eating disorders and suicidal ideation.
